London November 2013

A Pop Up Exhibition of hand-printed Chicha music posters took place on November 18th, 2013, at Maddox Gallery in Mayfair. The aim was to raise funds for a 3 month art workshop for underprivileged young people in the disadvantaged neighbourhood of Alto Peru in Chorrillos, Lima.

The exhibition “pop-up” was opened at Maddox Arts Gallery in London for 1 day, 20 hand-printed Chicha posters were available by silent auction and bids were taken throughout the day. This presented a rare opportunity to acquire a unique piece of Peruvian poster-art rarely seen outside Peru.

This project benefits otherwise forgotten communities by teaching them industry specific skills and by giving them access to a mentoring programme led by well-known local artists. The objective is to create new avenues of development through visual arts. The art workshop will conclude with an exhibition showcasing the student’s art pieces in a gallery in April 2014, Lima.

The Chicha Art Project is a new initiative, founded in London by Peruvian art director Elke Hanspach and Karin Hanspach (based in Lima) in collaboration with the British registered charity The Anglo Peruvian Society and the Peruvian non-profit organization Alto Peru.
